A local entrepreneur and owner of CCA Sports teamed up with DELV to imagine a concept that would infuse new energy into Indy’s long-established social hub–Broad Ripple. Dubbed “Monon Yard,” this unique destination is intentionally designed to engage locals of any age group. The design concept pairs outdoor dining with recreational sports tournaments, concerts, and large group gatherings to attract patrons to the area day and night.

Building with Boxes
Activating the highly visible site with stacked shipping containers was not only an economical choice, but it afforded flexibility in programming to create a uniquely memorable venue that matched Broad Ripple’s funky, eclectic vibe. Its perimeter style layout forms a central courtyard with greenspace that can accommodate anything from bocce ball and corn hole to outdoor movies and live music. Programming inside the containers can also flex; from food vendors, to seating, to warming spaces in the colder months. Adding natural elements like wood and plant life bring warmth and softness to balance the inherent rigidity of the containers.

A New Landmark
The building’s design, while predominantly neutral in color, is intentionally ‘stacked’ to offer passersby an invitational peek to the energy happening within. Large, tonal graphics allow the shipping containers to meld together as one cohesive structure, yet don’t take away their character.

Street Side
Scaled and sited with respect to the area’s existing urban fabric, vendors of various types will populate the micro-kitchen spaces drawing in those frequenting the adjacent and wildly popular Monon Trail.
