Geiger & Peters

Overview

Operating since 1905, steel fabricators Geiger & Peters wanted help reimagining their decades-old building. Taking the site’s context into careful consideration, we worked alongside Geiger & Peters’ steel craftsmen who eagerly rolled up their sleeves to develop the building structure and create custom steel pieces to throughout their new space.

Geiger & Peters
The Story

Sitting on the same plot of land for decades, Geiger & Peters’ (GP) rich history coupled with both industrial and residential neighbors was not to be ignored. Because of this, the new forms and materials needed to respect and meld seamlessly into its surroundings. GP’s engineers and craftsmen eagerly rolled up their sleeves to develop the building structure and create custom steel pieces throughout their newly renovated and expanded space.

Opening up the existing building’s choppy floor plan and prioritizing daylight became the starting point in allowing for a more comfortable work environment and collaboration spaces. Using their expertise, GP acted as their own structural engineer on the project. With steel typically taking a back seat aesthetically, this project instead aimed to showcase their handcrafted work throughout the space in creative ways.

What was once a plot of asphalt is now a bright lobby that boasts Geiger & Peters’ steel work with its weighty conference room doors, sleek staircase, and custom steel-base tables.

To the right of the bright lobby, a timeline wall spanning from 1905 to present day extends down a long hallway; reminding Geiger & Peters of where they’ve been and inviting visitors to learn about their long-standing history.

Continuity

Continuity

Upstairs, the brand’s staple red and black continues it’s statement through upholstery and feature walls that were once exterior. Natural daylight takes over with a multitude of windows presenting views to large steel structures outside.

Staying Connected

Staying Connected

The existing clerestory windows overlooking the paint floor are now actively engaged as a visible connection from the office spaces to the fabrication shop.

Industrial by Nature

Industrial by Nature

As with the other communal spaces, Geiger & Peters’ craftsmen eagerly rolled up their sleeves to create a custom steel island as the feature piece in the kitchen. Though it’s wide open to the rest of the office for easy access, dark matte casework hugged by a natural walnut enclosure distinguishes this area from the rest of the second floor.
