Beck Family Barn at Discovery Park District

Overview

Turning a century-old barn into a unique culinary destination was both a challenge and an exciting venture—one DELV was eager to accept.

Beck Family Barn at Discovery Park District
The Story

When the Beck family, well known in the world of agriculture and a trusted partner of Purdue Research Foundation, heard about the vision for revitalizing Squirrel Park, they offered one of their historic barns to be used as the centerpiece.

“We as a family wanted to give something back to Purdue and thought the Beck Barn would be particularly useful as a bridge between Indiana history, Purdue University, and their future development together.” —Sonny Beck

Originally built in the 1920’s, the deconstructed and reconstructed barn will be re-clad and updated to create a hospitality venue that honors the past of traditional barns found throughout Indiana, while also embracing the innovative and modern future of Purdue and the Discovery Park District. Inside the barn there will be spaces for retail, events, and a unique restaurant concept by award-winning Cunningham Restaurant Group (dubbed “The Lawrence” in honor of legacy farmer Lawrence Beck).

The Park's Centerpiece

With high sustainability aspirations and expansive green space surroundings, the project is phase one of the Master Plan for reimagining the existing Squirrel Park within the Discovery Park District. It’s purposeful, central siting helps to draw people in and through the park.

Concept Diagram

Prominence on the Plaza

The barn will be placed along the prominent District Boulevard Axis to give it prominence within the district. Specific placement was also thoughtful to maintain existing trees and create a focal point within the plaza space.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

Site Programming

Surrounding context and site programs were developed to both serve the building and activate the park to the north and plaza to the east. The barn placement will also enclose the courtyard of the condominium project to the south to create a more private space for the occupants.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

Interior Programming

The barn’s interior spaces include a restaurant and event center that are positioned to take advantage of the park’s views while also being thoughtful of public and private entry placement. Support areas wrap the west and south portions of the barn providing efficient service and buffering the site’s parking and service areas from the feature hospitality spaces.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

An Open Beacon

An outboard wood-slatted sun screen wall is introduced to the glazed gabrel facade to filter natural daylight into the barn during the day and block harsh morning sun. At night, the barn becomes a lantern to the park with interior light filtering through the screen within the open, two-story volume.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

Expansion and Support

A covered dining terrace is introduced to the North of the restraurant to reinforce the connections from exterior to interior, while also creating an architectural entry for the Event Center. To the West, a covered roof structure is added to provide coverage for the loading dock and back-of-house entry and screens these activities from adjacent properties.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

Plaza Activation

Park support structures are strategically placed to frame the barn and develop a central plaza space along the District Boulevard Axis. These buildings will also serve and activate the park with a variety of functions including markets, festivals, educational programs, and informal gathering and play, creating activation for the park and district year-round.
